Nashville Shakespeare Festival Presents A Midsummer Night's Dream
When: Pre-show 6:30 p.m., show 7:30. Thursdays-Sundays through Sept. 15, plus Labor Day Monday.
Where: Centennial Park Band Shell

Celebrating its 25th season of bringing the Bard to Music City, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival presents a new twist on one of his best-loved comedies in its annual Shakespeare in the Park production. The tale of fairies meddling in the love lives of humans does an exquisite job of making you laugh at man’s foibles, from the lofty level of the macro-social down to your own intimate relationships.

Seeing Shakespeare outdoors at night ramps up the ambience of magic and mystery, and the NSF staging, which incorporates contemporary local culture and an environmentally conscious attitude, should provide food for thought. (Concerned purists, refer to the star-studded 1999 feature film to see how well the plot adapts to a new setting.)

NSF artistic director Denice Hicks, a longstanding pillar of the Nashville theater community, directs as the troupe carries on its tradition of pairing seasoned actors with talented teens from the Apprentice Company. Food vendors will be on hand, just like in the old Globe Theatre, and a different musical act will warm up the crowd for each show.
