Transplanted Nashvillian Kenley Smith’s play Empires of the Eternal Void was developed during his tenure as a playwright in residence at Tennessee Rep’s 2011-12 Ingram New Works Lab. Now another original play by Smith is receiving local attention with a full-scale production by Playhouse Nashville, a program devoted to encouraging writing for the stage.
While this is a Music City premiere, Devil Sedan isn’t new — it premiered in 2008, receiving strong reviews at Barter Theatre’s Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights and the Great Plains Theatre Festival. Other Smith works, Godwin’s Law and Death in the Wires, were read recently at Playhouse Nashville’s 10-minute play series.
The advance publicity for Devil Sedan promises a dark and gritty crime thriller, and producer/director Christopher Bosen has assembled a promising and eclectic cast, including David Chattam, Tony Morton, Rosemary Fossee, Kristin McCalley, Richard Daniel, Andy Kanies, Phil Perry and others.
