Last night was the 2013 Costume Institute Ball, aka the Met Ball, Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual event that honors the opening of The Met's fashion exhibit. This year's exhibit, which opens May 9, is PUNK: Chaos to Couture. Below are some of the highlights — and a few snoozers — from the most important fashion event of the year.
Beyonce looks fantastic, but that comes as no surprise to anybody who's been paying attention. But this dress — or the train, more specifically — is going to go down in history as one of her top looks. The laser-cut edge is brilliant, and ugh those gloves and those boots.
This is the first time I've seen a dress from this collection off the runway, which is kind of a drag because Katy Perry is posing like a moron. Aside from that, this look is perfection.
Rooney Mara always looks like she's comfortable wearing high fashion gowns, and this is no exception. I love the combination of delicate lace and a zipper neckline. It's a clash that's perfect for the punk theme, but looks so elegant you'd hardly think it's derivative, sort of like that safety-pin Versace gown that Elizabeth Hurley made famous.
Leave it to the Rodarte sisters to make the see-through panel trend look distinctive. There is absolutely nothing bad about this look. Best of show? Perhaps.
I thought I hated Ashley Olsen's dress until I saw this picture of it. Seriously chic.
It's the Costume Institute Ball, not a costume party. I've been loving Miley's style these days, but this Marc Jacobs dress manages to be boring AND look like a Glenn Danzig T at the same time.
Also on my worst-dressed list: The always-boring Claire Danes, the in-this-instance-boring Gwyneth Paltrow, and Madonna, who looked really silly and sad. Also, now that Ivanka Trump has candy-colored hair can we all agree that it's not punk rock anymore?
