Visual Art / Culture Call for Artists: Metro Arts Seeking Proposals for Civil Rights-Themed Work on Fifth Avenue

Just past the 50th anniversary of the civil rights era's peak — some back story on the Nashville Movement, with focus on the Freedom Riders in particular here — Metro Nashville Arts Commission is planning to honor those involved by creating a memorial on Fifth Avenue. They’re currently looking for artists to design, create and install artworks before October 2013. This art project is open to professional artists and artist teams with a budget that allocates $75,000 for one artwork or multiple, related artworks.

There will be public workshops for the upcoming Civil Rights Public Art Project on Feb. 28, at the downtown library, and March 12, at the Looby Branch. Participants will have an opportunity to share personal thoughts and experiences while reflecting on Nashville’s role within the Civil Rights Movement. More info at the Metro Arts website and below:
