There have been a lot of minimalist movie posters going around, which may have been more of a crutch than any sort of design improvement. It was only a matter of time before Emoji Art History became a thing — and as any recent visit to Twitter can tell you, that time is now.
It started as a Tumblr post, but once the endless possibilities of summing up artists' entire oeuvres into a series of glorified emoticons was understood, it morphed into something much more immediate. The kind folks at Hyperallergic have compiled a Best Of list for the #emojiarthistory tweets, and they've been updating them regularly. An elephant and a pile of shit? That's Chris Ofili! A bunch of flags? Jasper Johns! Scroll through and find your favorite, then add to the discussion.
