If you were curious back in 2011 when Katori Hall's play
The Mountaintop arrived on Broadway with a spectacular two-person cast — Samuel L. Jackson as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Angela Bassett as the Memphis motel maid who visits his room the night before his assassination in April 1968 — that ship has sailed, alas. But you can see what may be the first local production of the play 6 p.m. tonight at Vanderbilt's Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center.
It too is anchored by two strong players: Mary McCallum of SistaStyle Productions and Rashad "thaPoet" Rayford (who just received acclaim as Boy Willie in Circle's production of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson). Jackie Welch Schlicher directs.
The performance is free and open to the public. Call 322-2524 for more information.
