Tonight: The Rude Mechs' The Method Gun at Vanderbilt

Great Performances: The Rude Mechanicals' The Method Gun
When: 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1
Where: Vanderbilt's Langford Auditorium

When the Scene spoke to Great Performances director Bridgette Kohnhorst at the beginning of last year’s season, she spoke about the new directions taking place in her programming. “We’ve tightened our focus,” she said, “and curatorially, we’ve looked at what we clearly do offer the Nashville public audience that you cannot get every day. That is our contemporary dance, our world music, our edgy theater.” The Rude Mechanicals certainly fall under the latter category. The Austin, Texas, theater collective is dedicated to creating new works for adventurous theatergoers — this production even comes with an “Adults Only” warning that the performance “contains nudity, adult language, sexual situations, smoke, and gunshots.” (Sold!)

The Method Gun examines the work of fictitious actor-training guru Stella Burden, “the other Stella,” whose method was known as the “The Approach” and heralded as “the most dangerous acting technique in the world.” It treated even the most perfunctory roles with elements of sex, death and violence. For those of us who are bored with theater that plays it too safe, Great Performances is slated to come through for us once again.
