Presented last year as part of Tennessee Repertory Theatre’s holiday celebration, the folkish/bluegrass revue Christmas Down Home, led by the multitalented David Alford and ace musician/arranger Paul Carrol Binkley, was one of the wonderful surprises of the season. It returns this year with a savvy ensemble of players led by Kahle Alford and Erin R. Ramsey, singers who offer engaging renditions of carols, light verse and nostalgic stories, and the Alford/Binkley piece-de-resistance: Truman Capote’s bittersweet “A Christmas Memory.”
The production has been playing at venues around the city since last weekend. For the week before Christmas, through Dec. 22, it settles into Belmont Mansion, which should prove a warm holiday backdrop. Tickets are $38.50. For a bite of figgy pudding, see below for Binkley's performance of "O Holy Night," recorded last year with Toni Ferguson on violin and Brad Albin on bass.
