Country Life contributor and midnight movie apologist Lance Conzett has been schooling us hard on the The High Watt’s alter ego as a venue for stellar comedy shows. Case in point: the pick he wrote on Pete Holmes for the Nov. 15 Scene:
If you’re a fan of stand-up comedy and you haven’t taken in a comedy show at The High Watt yet, you’re messing up hard. Mercy Lounge’s baby sister has only a handful of stand-up shows under her belt — including gigs by notable comics like Neal Brennan and Kyle Kinane — but they’ve gone off astonishingly well. High Watt is making a name for itself as a reliable source of charmingly offbeat bar-room comedy, and this month’s booking of comedian/podcaster Pete Holmes is no exception. Last year’s Impregnated With Wonder cemented Holmes as an absurdist everyman — starting off on relatable subjects (Facebook! Fun dads! The ennui of YouTube comments!) before driving them off a cliff of shrill madness that’s as funny as it is completely nuts. Catch him now before he’s blowing up theaters.
The reason for our premature publication of Lance’s praise? We got our hands on some free tickets to Friday's Pete Holmes shows at The High Watt — a pair for the 7 p.m. set and another pair for the 9 p.m. set. Want ’em? Come and get ’em, but here’s the catch: You’ve got to make us laugh, even just a little, with a caption for the above picture. Submit your caption in the comments below, make sure you include an email address so we can contact you, and sit back and enjoy the glory. You've got until noon on Friday to come up with something — we'll announce our winners that afternoon. Hooray for comedy!
