Allison on Allison: Caroline Allison Discusses Her Exhibit at Zeitgeist

Posted By on Tue, Oct 16, 2012 at 11:55 AM

Watch Caroline Allison discuss the photographs in More Than You Know, which is on view at Zeitgeist through Oct. 27. My review of the exhibit will be in Thursday's dead-tree edition of the Scene, and you can read the pick I wrote on it below.

Like detail-obsessed photographers Stephen Shore, Gregory Crewdson and Ansel Adams, Caroline Allison uses a large-format camera. This means her images pick up quirks and nuances that are even realer than reality, like the image on a high-definition TV. If you haven’t seen her fine art photography before, you may have seen her editorial work in Garden & Gun or Travel & Leisure — she’s one of their best go-to photographers.

For her latest exhibition of new work at Zeitgeist, Allison has prepared images from her investigation of historic sites across the South, invoking themes of miscommunication and rewritten histories. From her exhibition statement: “The context and irony of images such as ‘Rust College’ … open the door for viewers to dig a bit deeper themselves to their meaning and relevancy. The commentary is not necessarily hers but that of the passage of time.”
