Nashville Drinking Game

Tonight’s the night: Nashville premieres on ABC at 9pm. I’ve actually been looking forward to it for quite a while; even though I don’t expect it to reflect the city that I personally know, I expect it to be big, soapy fun. You know what’s smart to do while watching primetime soaps? Drink. In fact, to help you out, I’ve rustled together a drinking game for tonight’s pilot episode. Grab a bottle of Jack, a growler of Yazoo, or just polish off that Corsair gin with these sure-to-happen cues:

The Establishing Shot
Take a shot at every instance of the skyline or a notable Nashville landmark. You’re already wasted!

The Shout Out
Drink every time a character mentions a country music legend, i.e., “Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline used to eat at this Pinkberry!”

Alt-Country
Drink at any signs of alt-country or hipsterism. Signs include beer in cans, looking like the ‘70s, and East Nashville.

“Paying your dues.”
Drink if a character says “paying your/his/her dues.”

Bitchface
Drink every time Connie Britten gives Hayden Panettiere withering bitchface, and vice-versa.

iTunes
Drink if ABC encourages you to head to iTunes and download any of the songs heard in this episode of the hit new series Nashville.

Polly Tickin’
Pick a side, Demmycrat or ‘Publican. If politician character Lamar Wyatt (Powers Boothe) seems to fall on your chosen side of the aisle, drink. Protip: If he acts like a Republican circa 1980, he’s actually a Tennessee Democrat.

Local Celebrities
Is that Bob Mueller? Drink!

“I know that guy.”
Is that person in the background someone you actually know? Drink, and buy your friend a drink. Extras barely get paid.

Check back in tomorrow morning for my recap of the pilot episode, and, hopefully, every week hereafter. I’d really like for something to replace Hee-Haw in the national consciousness when they hear the word “Nashville.”
