Caroline Kennedy
When: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9
Where: Nashville Public Library

As the only living child of President John F. Kennedy and Jackie O, Caroline Kennedy isn’t exactly a neutral party when it comes to her father’s life or time in office. But her curiosity about one of the most famous and beloved first families in American history is, tragically, perhaps very similar to ours, and that’s what makes the new book, for which she wrote the forward, so fascinating.

Listening In: The Secret White House Recordings of John F. Kennedy is a compilation of some 265 hours of audio taken from the hidden recording system Kennedy himself had installed in the Oval Office. Along with official discussions of everything from the Cuban missile crisis to the civil rights movement, the tapes are said to include hours of phone calls and Kennedy’s own reflections. While much of it has been released in pieces before, it is compiled in Listening In for the first time, along with national security-related portions of the tapes that have just recently been declassified. Caroline Kennedy will be signing the book as part of the Salon@615 series.
