Bloomsday Celebration at Parnassus Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the 16th of June, which to James Joyce aficionados is, of course, Bloomsday, the date on which Ulysses is set, and in Dublin and beyond, is the appointed time to celebrate the life and works of the late Irish writer.

As any literary establishment worth its beach fireworks display would do, Nashville's Parnassus Books is hosting its own Bloomsday event, starting at 5 p.m. Scheduled readers include Maura O'Connell, Mac Bennett, Deirdre and Tony Kerr, Annie McCue and what we are simply told will be "guests." Famous guests? Dubliners? We simply don't know.

The Parnassus Bloomsday celebration is only scheduled to last for an hour and a half, so I'm guessing they don't plan to read Ulysses in its entirety, as is sometimes the case in these celebrations — although, come to think of it, that would be amazing! Meanwhile, it occurs to me now that maybe this classic Nirvana cut is actually about trying to read Ulysses ...
