NaFF 2012: What to See Tuesday

Posted By on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 9:29 AM

• Learn the secrets of song placement from the music supervisors who've given everything from Glee to The Shield their distinctive soundtracks. Evyen Klean (Hemingway & Gellhorn, Game Change), Tricia Holloway (Middle Men, Honey 2), PJ Bloom (Glee, American Horror Story), Wende Crowley (Easy A, Friends with Benefits), Jenee Deangelis (Cold Case) and Michael Freeman, music producer with Ogilvy & Mather, will offer two panels: the first — today's — is open to the general public for $15. 1:30 p.m., Green Hills

• A good day to catch several of the films competing for the NaFF's award in Hispanic cinema, including Were the World Mine director Tom Gustafson's Mariachi Gringo (5:30 p.m., starring X-Men's Shawn Ashmore), Artificial Paradises (5:45 p.m.), the documentary La Camioneta — The Journey of One American School Bus (7:30 p.m., trailer above), and the hoarding drama Maria My Love (8 p.m.).

• The Belcourt habitues coming out of the Thai hitman drama Headshot last night highly recommended it; it's playing again at 2 p.m. Also playing is another of last night's best selections, Andrei Zvyagintsev's Elena, a cold, steadily involving take on a scheming-wife scenario James M. Cain could have devised. It's at 11:30 a.m.

• Tonight's 7 p.m. premiere of Butch Walker: Out of Focus is sold out. Tickets remain for most everything else, including the first local screening of the dysfunctional-family comedy The Perfect Family (9 p.m.), starring Kathleen Turner, Emily Deschanel and Jason Ritter. If you missed the packed opening-night screening of Hell or High Water: The Story of the Nashville Rollergirls, your second shot is tonight at 10 — with an equally rowdy audience of attending Rollergirls, we hope.

• Also tonight: festival favorite Under African Skies (9:45 p.m.), Joe Berlinger's film about the making of Paul Simon's landmark Graceland album.

• Plus we've been told not to miss the sick, sick short "After School Special," playing tonight as part of Graveyard Shift's OMG! WTF? shorts package at 10. Consult the NaFF schedule online here.
