The Belcourt has relaunched its Saturday-morning film programming for kids in a big way, offering weekly selections ranging from Disney blockbusters to acclaimed titles that never received their due. (Watch coming weeks for Duma, the 2005 nature drama by The Black Stallion director Carroll Ballard, and a morning screening of Back to the Future.)
This week’s falls under the heading of “art film for kids,” though it’s hardly the plate of spinach that description portends: it’s A World of Animation, a touring package of award-winning animated shorts gathered by Seattle’s Northwest Film and Children’s Festival 2011, starring the likes of a flying flapjack (Germany’s “Tally Ho Pancake”), a stop-motion conch (the U.S.’s “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” above), and a boy and his penguin companion (the U.K. marvel “Lost and Found”).
The program is suitable for ages 5 and up; admission is $5, with $1 popcorn and drinks available.

Kids, schmids.... I'll be the first one in line to see THE BLACK STALLION! Ballard's NEVER CRY WOLF is one of my all-time favorites and I like THE BLACK STALLION almost as much. Heck, Ballard's FLY AWAY HOME is pretty darn good, too. Hey, I see the makings of a nature-themed festival... yee-hah!
I realized afterwards that you meant DUMA was showing at the Belcourt, not THE BLACK STALLION. Well since I haven't seen DUMA - and I love Ballard's other films - I'll be the first in line for that, too! Although I'd still love to see THE BLACK STALLION (and NEVER CRY WOLF) on the big screen.
