Tonight: Ballet Folklorico de Antioquia, Colombia, at Schermerhorn

Posted By on Wed, Feb 15, 2012 at 5:00 AM

The day after Johnny Mathis and the Nashville Symphony perform for Valentine’s Day, things get a little more up-tempo at the Schermerhorn. The Ballet Folklorico performance is considered a “special event” on the Schermerhorn calendar — indeed, globe-trotting ensembles such as this usually turn up on Vandy’s Great Performances docket or otherwise maybe at TPAC.

At any rate, the live music they present is heavily rhythmic, while 16 dancers enact a vibrant, sometimes sexy mix of modern dance and traditionally inspired movement that hearkens back to the native country’s colorful street celebrations. Expect lovely costumes, lots of guitar and percussion, some fairly high decibel levels and an exuberance that has been known to get audiences out of their seats to join in the festivities.
