Design Process: Chris Zidek and The Ascent of Everest

Posted by Steve Haruch on Tue, Feb 7, 2012 at 12:00 PM

If there's one thing I love, it's meticulously hand-drawn designs, built up one painstaking stroke at a time with nothing but a pen and the sort of OCD that makes the faint of heart turn to vector software. I also love screen printing, Grand Palace and post-rock with chime-y meandering guitars — so this video is pretty much my favorite thing right now. It features artist Chris Zidek, discussing his ridiculously intricate poster design for the local band The Ascent of Everest, with some nicely shot footage of his process and the subsequent print by GP's Drew Binkley. Incidentally, if you dig the sound bed, TAOE play The End this Saturday, Feb. 11.

Wow. That's like watching monks assemble a mandala.

Thanks for sharing. That's amazing to watch some amazing art work being created. Is the artist selling that design online? It'd be nice to see how much one of those posters would cost to have. Also, wouldn't mind that design on a t-shirt.

I'm not sure if it's being sold online, but I imagine they'll be for sale at the show at The End on Saturday night.

Sam Smith always gives me hell whenever I ask if his designs are available on T-shirt. Is that some kind of faux pas?
