On special occasions, this brilliant display will take place in front of a world-class novelist (Salman Rushdie is a repeat guest and has joined in the dancing) or an actual movie star. And all this is preceded by a cold open, featuring Craig Ferguson, host of The Late Late Show, talking to his robot sidekick Geoff and pacing as he complains about his show’s lack of a live band, before rightly shouting, “It’s a great day for America, everybody!”
Indeed it is. Ferguson’s stand-up expands on his meandering late-late-night monologues, occasionally arriving at subjects that he can only allude to on air, even in the dark corner of network TV in which he resides. His last visit to Nashville was to tape a comedy special, and while it did not include the aforementioned hooved guest, the Broadway streets did offer up a few drunken hecklers. God bless America.
Ferguson plays TPAC's Polk Theatre at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Tickets $37.50.
