The Weekly Open Thread: The Best of Bread

No, I'm not talking about the multiplatinum greatest hits record by the legendary ’70s soft-rock band, nor am I talking about comedian/musician Chris Crofton's former WRVU radio show. I'm talking about actual bread.

And more specifically, I'm talking about bread as it relates to sandwiches. As far as I'm concerned, a sandwich can't be any better than the bread it's on, no matter the quality of ingredients. That's not to say that great bread can compensate for mediocre sandwich fixin's. But the wrong bread can really kill a sandwich with top-notch fillings.

My pet peeves: I don't like a high bread-to-filling ratio. I want the bread to be the vehicle, not the star of the show. I don't want my bread to spongy either. Sometimes I like wheat, sometimes I like white or sourdough. It really depends on the particular sandwich. Sometimes I enjoy focaccia, but it can also be too thick in certain situations.

And what about burgers? You like kaiser rolls? Brioche? Spongy white?

And what else is on your mind?
