Mitchell Deli Has New Digs, But the Same Vibe

Some of us don’t like change. Once we have a favorite sandwich spot, we don’t want anything to upset the special balance of neighborhood hangout/turkey apple brie sandwich/easy parking.

So, it was with some trepidation that I headed to 1306 McGavock Pike, the new location of Mitchell Deli, just one block away from its old much-beloved location at 1402 McGavock. The restaurant closed its old doors on Nov. 28 and reopened in the new, bigger space on December 4. Crossing Riverside Drive to get to the new location shouldn’t be that big of a deal. It is less than one block away. But Mitchell has been at its old location since 2008, meaning it was in Riverside Village before anything in Inglewood was cool. It has a certain nostalgia, if you can be nostalgic about something so new you can remember when it didn't exist.

Well, change-adverse Inglewooders, you can stop holding your breath. The new Mitchell Deli is bigger and fancier than our old favorite, but it is the same old sandwich spot. The menu is slightly enlarged, with some specials, like the Asian flank steak, now on the regular menu. (I’m hoping more space means more varieties of Bagel Face bagels to be added in the near future.) The ingredient list is still weighted heavily toward goods that are made nearby. There’s a soda bar, and draft beer is in the works.

But the new menu isn’t so enlarged that it can’t be navigated. There now are two cash registers to process diners more quickly, and plenty of seating, both at tables and counters and, when the weather permits, outside.

I’ll miss being able walk right out back to the community courtyard seating Mitchell shared with Sip coffee shop. And, with music playing and a bigger seating area with high ceilings, it was slightly harder to hear my name called when my sandwich was ready. I’d still argue — as I have for almost five years — that Mitchell is not really a deli. Yes, you can get meats and cheeses to go, but I’m kind of a Northerner purist when it comes to delis. Even if they add giardiniera and salad dressings to go, as the rumors suggest, I think Mitchell is a sandwich shop — albeit a very good one — and not a deli. Even with the more ample space in the new location, that seems to still be the case. Deli or no, west of Riverside Drive or east, Mitchell remains an Inglewood standout.

The new Mitchell Deli is at 1306 McGavock Pike, 615-262-9862, mitchelldeli.com. Additional parking can be found across the street, behind Bailey and Cato.
