Since early July, folks at The Cookery have been serving up coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner in a little building on 12th Avenue South (just south of Wedgewood). Behind the restaurant — in the same building — proprietors Brett Swayn and Terry Kemper are realizing their dream to have a working culinary school dedicated to training homeless individuals for work in the food service industry. The restaurant is a logical extension of the school, and all revenues from The Cookery fund associated programs that benefit the homeless.

The Cookery will be celebrating its grand opening this Friday, Sept. 6. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., the ceremony will include an appearance by Mayor Karl Dean, who will take a short tour of the facility, sample the cuisine and cut the ribbon.

Operating hours for the restaurant are Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The breakfast menu offers a number of inexpensive options and a variety of coffee drinks, and the lunch and dinner menu consists of salads, baked potatoes, burgers, sandwiches and specialty items and desserts — certainly something to interest everyone (including gluten-free and vegetarian options). Nightly dinner specials are shared via the Facebook page. The pricing for lunch and dinner is also much more budget-friendly than some other restaurants operating in the higher-rent district just south of The Cookery.

The Cookery has acknowledged that parking can be a bit of a challenge, but notes that parking is available on nearby side streets (Acklen is around the corner, and Grove is just across 12th Avenue South from the restaurant).
