The "Two Boots" name refers to two great boot-shaped culinary regions of the world: Italy and Louisiana. The restaurant opened in New York's East Village in 1987. Founded by indie filmmaker Phil Hartman, it quickly became known not just for pizza but for hosting cultural happenings like live music and film screenings.
There are now 15 outposts of Two Boots around the country. The Nashville location is the first in the South.
The Two Boots menu emphasizes Louisiana influences (the Bayou Beast features shrimp, crawfish, andouille and jalapenos) and whimsical pop culture references (the Tony Clifton is topped with shiitakes, vidalia onions and sweet red pepper pesto, while the Mr. Pink unites Creole chicken, plum tomatoes and garlic).
Especially noteworthy is the fact that Two Boots offers pizzas not just whole but also by the slice, a rarity in Nashville.
The design of each location is tailored to local arts and culture. We hear the Nashville restaurant will have a Kitty Wells theme, with local artists creating the interior design. Local food purveyors will be tapped for a few new Nashville-centric pizza creations.
Sam Boyer, a New York transplant, and his wife Kim, who hails from Mississippi, will operate the Nashville location. It will fill 2,000 square feet of space at 1927 Broadway, including a patio, and is projected to open in May.
