Being selected to cook at the James Beard House in New York City is quite an honor, one which a few local chefs have enjoyed over the past few years. But being invited to cook Valentine's Day dinner is a special kudo. Nashville home cooking will be represented this year in the Big Apple by the team from the world-famous Loveless Cafe. Executive chef Bart Pickens will pack up his equipment and his staff — including senior pitmaster George Harvell, pastry chef Alisa Huntsman and chef Daniel Dillingham — and take the show on the road to James Beard's former house at 167 West 12th St. in Greenwich Village, where Beard and Julia Child used to share recipes and the occasional martini.

Chef Pickens is thrilled about the challenge. "For a chef to cook at the James Beard House is like an athlete being invited to the Olympics. It's an honor that you don't take lightly, as you could work your whole life and never have that opportunity." The Loveless gang is bringing their A-game, with a menu of some of the restaurant's strongest dishes and some other Nashville favorites as accompaniments:

Passed Appetizers
Pimento Cheese Profiteroles with Bread & Butter Pickles
Hickory-Smoked Trout on Potato Planks with Lemon
Aioli, Mustard Seed Caviar & Micro Dill

I sure hope that there is somebody at each table to explain to those Yankees what the proper etiquette is when the fried chicken hits the table. I'd hate to see another civil war erupt over the last drumstick. If you're interested in attending, or have Manhattanite friends who need to learn a little something about the South, you can find all the skinny at the James Beard event site. Or even better, Loveless has teamed up with Southwest Airlines for a pretty fabulous contest. The sweepstakes winner will receive:

Round-trip air travel on Southwest Airlines®
Two nights' hotel accommodations at the Hilton New York
Two tickets to the Loveless Cafe Beard House Dinner
Round-trip shuttle transportation between the airport, hotel, and Beard House Dinner
$500.00 in cash to cover additional expenses

You can enter here until Feb. 1. Here's hoping a Bites reader wins and can report back about how well the Loveless Cafe represented Music City!
