Jan. 22 is D Day, or rather TDS Day, as Atlanta-based Taqueria del Sol plans to open the doors to the neighborhood on that date after a few days of private events to work out the kinks. (It fills the 12th Avenue South spot formerly held by Fish & Co., and before that, neighborhood pioneer Mirror.)

Known for its inventive take on Mexican cuisine, which exhibits a decidedly cross-cultural flair, Taqueria del Sol launched in 2000. Their fast-casual service model puts the emphasis on both "fast" and "service," as patrons place their order at the counter and then receive their food at the table.

The kitchen plays with Southern ingredients while touting an emphasis on local produce and striving to keep prices low. The chain was named "best bang for your buck" by Atlanta Magazine and one of the "Top American Restaurants" by Bon Appétit. John T. Edge called TDS' turnip greens one of “100 Southern Foods You Absolutely Must Try Before You Die" in Garden and Gun, so you gotta figure they must be kickin'.

The restaurant will feature a full bar with liquor, beer and some renowned margaritas. Even though the location is a franchise of the eight-restaurant chain based out of Atlanta, ownership and management is decidedly local, with four partners who say they want to make an impact in the community. Other locations are known for participating in many charitable events, so get used to seeing the name and logo around town.

Give them a try and let us know what you think in the comments. (After you've actually given them a try ...)
