Presented by the Nashville Scene and Her Nashville, Sugar Rush was held at the Cannery Ballroom on July 25. This event sold out for the second year in a row, packing in a bunch of sweet teeth who weren’t afraid of triple digit temperatures or sharp spikes in glycemic indexes. Returning champions The Cupcake Collection were hungry to win the gold again, even offering a brand-new cupcake flavor, a delightful butter pecan, to swing the vote.
Here’s who got into the ring to take home the crown:
1808 Grille, Ben & Jerry’s, Bound’ry Restaurant, Chef’s Market, Diana’s Sweet Shop, Fox’s Donut Den, Goo Goo Cluster, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, Nothing Bundt cakes, Nucci’s Gelato & More, Olive & Sinclair, Pinkberry, Pralines by Leon, The Cupcake Collection, Tipsy Treats, Walker Creek Toffee and Whole Foods Markets. Beverages were provided by Bud Select 55 (hey, if you’re going to eat all of that dessert, you might as well have an ultra-light beer), Smirnoff and Just Love Coffee Roasters.
I can personally vouch for the deliciousness of each option, as I sampled each and every dessert. Yes, friends, I am a true athlete at the dessert table. I was blown away by the new Cupcake Collection option, fell in love with Walker Creek Toffee, and tried to get a mild buzz from Tipsy Treats. I’d already tasted each and every flavor of Jeni’s ice cream, but I tried them again. I even put an apple fritter from Donut Den in my pocket, no lie.
More than 350 people cast their votes that night, and as it often does, history repeated itself. The Cupcake Collection was crowned our 2012 winners! Mignon and A.E. François graciously accepted their trophy and thanked their loyal subjects.
