Shark Week Is Coming: Celebrate with Some Mako Vodka

Posted by on Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 8:20 AM

The Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week is a reason to celebrate for some and an occasion to hide under the covers for others. Whether you're a fan or not, Shark Week has become a notable part of the zeitgeist. There's even an unofficial countdown timer until the first blood froths the water. This year's Shark Week, the 25th installment, starts Aug. 12.

What better way to celebrate the debut of Sharkzilla, Air Jaws Apocalypse and the rest of the Shark Week lineup than with a relative newcomer to the Nashville market, Mako Vodka? Billed as a "nautical vodka," Mako celebrates the seafaring life and supports many oceanic charities. Distilled five times and made with hand-selected grains, Mako is also an award-winning product with an exceptionally clean flavor.

In honor of Shark Week, the folks at Mako have shared some fun facts about their pelagic namesake, the Mako shark:

• It's the fastest shark in the water. A Mako can swim up to 60 mph when on the hunt.

• Nickname: “The Cheetah of the Sea.”

• Extremely adaptable. Can live in warm, cold, shallow or deep water.

• Slightly famous. The Short Fin Mako was featured in Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.

• Cool trick: A Mako will leap out of the water. Scientists are befuddled at why they do this. We think they want to check out the scene.

You can pick up a bottle of Mako for about $20 at most of the larger liquor retailers in the area including Frugal MacDoogal's, Midtown Wine & Spirits, Red Spirits & Wine and Brinkmann's Wine & Spirits. Once you have the shark tamed in your home bar, try one of these recipes while you settle into the recliner to watch Sharking in the Shallows.
