Wandering Wino: Insert Weather Joke Here Edition

Posted By on Fri, Jun 29, 2012 at 7:44 AM

With this oppressive heat, it's almost impossible to think about leaving the house to go out drinking. But I know that you Bitesters are an intrepid lot, so here are a few reasons to melt your tires on the asphalt.

The first event isn't even really alcohol-related. However, it does make a great mixer. Do you remember Lotus, the energy drink company started by a young local family of entrepreneurs? Well, they're celebrating their second birthday as a company and want to you to the party this week. Here's the creatively punctuated invitation:

-hang out with move go-go dancers & lotus drangels.
-dance to lucy blu’s state of the art sound & light system, or just enjoy a cocktail on their patio.
-food & full bar, 2 for 1 drinks until 9:30pm.
-nice casual dress code, NO athletic gear, just look good :)

this isn't a show up late party, come at 8:30pm to get in free, have some lotus cocktail samples, help judge the mixology contest and get the party started.

music: house, electro house, progressive house

If you know the difference between these three types of house music, then this is the party for you. Not me. I always get them confused with Crowded House.

Another great way to stay cool and join in a celebration this weekend will be at the first birthday party for Jeni's Ice Cream in East Nashville. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, they're offering a limited-edition ice cream that just screams Nashville: Yazoo Sue with Rosemary Bar Nuts.

The flavor is fueled by Yazoo Brewing Co.'s Sue, an incredible porter that should offer a unique flavor counterpoint to the butter creamy goodness of Jeni's. Here's how the folks at Jeni's describe it:

This flavor is inspired by one of life’s greatest pleasures, a craft beer and a side of savory
bar nuts.

This is grass-grazed cream blended with a creamy, rich, and mellow cherry wood smoked porter (beer) from our friends at the Yazoo Brewing Company. Yazoo is near our shop in Nashville and they make all their beers the way we make all our ice creams — from scratch (and with no preservatives, etc.).

The ice cream is thick with toasted almonds, cashews, peanuts, and pecans that we toast with brown sugar, aromatic rosemary, and a little bit of cayenne.

The ice cream is rich and creamy and the cherry and smoky notes in the beer shine through. The heat from the cayenne is subtle at first and then builds nicely on the finish.

They'll be selling scoops of the limited-edition flavor and will have 100 pints for sale starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow at their location at 1892 Eastland Ave.

For a more adult experience, head over to Uptown's in Green Hills for a cigar and whiskey tasting featuring Angels' Envy bourbon and six different unreleased cigars from Studio Tobac. The event is hosted by Grace's Plaza Wine and Spirits and will run from 5 to 9 tonight, and you'll even have the chance to meet Studio Tobac brand ambassador Bryan Scholle rolling cigars. Hopefully they'll have some A/C for the poor guy...
