If you're free tomorrow evening (Thursday, May 3), you could do a lot of eating for a little money as senior culinary students from the Art Institute of Tennessee put on a four-course dinner to benefit Second Harvest.

Former Scene restaurant writer Kay West occasionally laments Nashville's lack of a true French restaurant. The AI dinner menu should scratch that itch: It's an intriguing mix of French classics and New World fresh cuisine.

Thirty-five dollars buys a starter of passed hors d'oeuvres including salmon roulade and classic escargot in mushrooms (which only Sperry's serves these days). Salad course is arugula and watermelon salad with house-made ricotta and spiced pecans. Dinner is dilled sous vide cod with salmon quenelles (which I haven't seen on a menu in Nashville maybe ever). Third course is braised rabbit in pastry with roasted fennel and crispy spinach. Dessert is a chiboust of berry and citrus chiboust, which I had to google.(Pastry creme lightened with whipped cream.)

Dinner's at Course Restaurant at the Art Institute, 100 Crestview Drive, Suite 250, 37214 (that's Donelson). Choose a 6:30 or 8:30 seating. Get a reservation for either the 6:30 or 8:30 seating by calling 796-4148. You'll settle up at the door.
