House-Made Potato Chip Crunch Match

The trend toward house-made potato chips gets my vote. Whether they're cooked crisp or still slightly chewy, the deep browning gives an extra layer of flavor, with plenty of hefty crunch. Each batch seems to have a couple of thicker-cut chips that still have some chew to them toward the center, which is a whole other pleasure.

Cut thin and properly cooked, they're great plain, as served to a lunch group recently at Fleet Street, a reminder of how good potato chips can be. Maybe a bit of seasoning — the truffled potato chips at Cha Chah are just the thing with a cocktail. And they're also great jazzed up, as served to a dinner crowd at Yolos. Dolloped with with sour cream and sprinkled with bacon, green onions and blue cheese, these chips rose to the level of appetizer rather than snack.

Homemade potato chips are so innately good that it's hard to pinpoint the best in town. But let's try — where have you had some incredible homemade chips?

"the deep browning gives an extra layer of flavor" - bitter, burnt potatoes =/= flavor.

I can say this, Germantown Cafe East has the worst ones. They're ruffled and always overdone. It's kind of gross.
Margot has great chips, so does Holland House.

We've always liked the ones at Cabana.

No doubt, Margot. Nothing else compares.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them "incredible," but I've had surprisingly good house-made chips at the Frist Center cafe.

Tavern's ruffled chips are pretty good.

Edley's uses homemade potato chips in their version bbq nachos. It's a pretty inspired move.

Neros has some pretty tasty chips with sea salt and blue cheese crumbles. Don't eat there often but have always had a good meal when I do. Plus you get hot water corn cakes!

I'll give Logan's a spot on the worst list. Was thnking Blackstone had chips as well, but could be mistaken.

showing my age and geographic wanderlust, but a hundred years ago - ok, 30 - Red Robin was a West Coast-only burger joint, and they had homemade potato chips that were dusted in Parmesan and absolutely to die for. I don't know what corporate gearhead made the decision to pretend such things never existed, but it's up there with yanking Big Boy from Shoney's for marking when a given company jumped the shark.

seems like everywhere you go these days they're making their own chips. Can't say they all should. So far nobdy's blown me away. I would give anthing to see a Charles Chips truck heading down my street !

I'm just reminded by "kuntrageous"'s comment, on our first visit to Holland House, their veggie chips were AMAZING. Second trip they'd change them, and still good, but not as good as before. Not sure what they are now, as I haven't had them in a bit.

Maybe I'm on the wrong side of the tracks, but every restaurant chip I've ever sampled has been too soggy, too bland or too burnt. Lay's are good enough for me. Better yet, I'd also like to see Charles Chips again.
