Robert Bower, a seventh-generation winemaker at Taylor Fladgate, will be leading a tasting of Taylor Fladgate and Fonseca ports. Just $35 plus tax and service charge gets you 10 tastings and small plates to accompany. Here are the details from the sommelier:
We will be tasting in 2 separate rooms — the Carneros will be our Tawny Room, where we will have 5 tawny ports to taste as listed.
1) A "Century of Tawny Port" will be 4 one-ounce pours of 10, 20, 30, and 40 year Tawny Ports that when added together equal 100 years.
2) Also in this room we will have a single vintage Tawny named Taylor-Fladgate "Vargellis" vintage will be 2005 and these single vintage ports are called Colheita.
3) There will be a small plate of food to accompany these fabulous wines
Then we will go to Bordeaux room, renamed the Ruby Room, to taste all the fabulous Ruby ports, these will also be accompanied with a small plate of food that pair with ruby ports and will include as listed:
1) 2005 Fonseca "Late bottle vintage" Port
2) 2000 Fonseca Vintage port
3) 2009 Fonseca Vintage port
4) Non Vintage Fonseca "Terra Bella" Organic port

Another luminary of the wine world will be in town on Tuesday, Jan. 31, when Miel Restaurant welcomes Lionello Marchesi, known for years as one of the great producers of the area of Tuscany around Montalcino. His Castello di Monastero, Coldisole and Poggio Alle Sughere wineries consistently put out some of the best Tuscan juice.
The event costs $69/person plus tax and gratuity and features five wines and four courses. Here's the menu:
