Wandering Wino Discovers a New Source for Booze Newz

With Turkey Day approaching, the wine tasting calendar is a little sparse this week. When you drop by your favorite wine shop this weekend to pick up a bottle to match with your bird, I'm sure at least some of them will have a few winners open for sampling. If you're looking for advice before you head out shopping, traditional pairings for turkey are a Gewurztraminer or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio to cut through the butter if you're into whites or a delicate Pinot Noir to perk up the mushroom gravy. A jammy Zinfandel or Syrah is like cranberry sauce in a glass with the benefit of adding some peppery notes to accompany your stuffing. You also can't go wrong with an extra-dry sparkler, because bubbles make everything more festive.

If you're looking for even more advice, especially about spirits, your Wandering Wino suggests that you visit the new site at Drink Music City. The entertaining writers at this repository of liquor information write about many of the most popular brands of spirits available in the Nashville market. So far, they've written about some ultra-high end vodka, one of my favorite cocktails and what purports to be the Gatorade of vodka. Unlike some drink writers who take themselves too seriously in the attempt to come up with the perfect adjective for a flavor (I'm looking at me, Mr. Wino), the writers at Drink Music City have a delightfully playful tone when they write about spirits. Though, I'm guessing it won't be too long before they accidentally slip a "delightful melon, oily cedar and perceptible carrot" reference in there.

They're also a good place to get tipped off about some special events at your favorite bars which are only publicized at the site. Until now ... when I tell you about their "Fireball Friday" hoedown tonight at the Melrose on Franklin Road starting at 8 p.m. Whether you love it or hate it, Fireball brand cinnamon whiskey has become ubiquitous in Nashville bars, and I hear that even the national marketing executives for the brand have journeyed to Nashville to try to figure out where your insatiable appetite for this stuff comes from. (Hint: it tastes pretty good and gets you effed up in a hurry.)

So head on over to their website and go visit the folks at Drink Music City for some swag and some beverage deals. I'll be the turkey quietly nursing a glass of bourbon in the corner watching the festivities from afar.
