Sometimes we forget that sake is wine, too. Mainly because most people's only experience with sake is sipping the hot jet fuel while waiting for sushi to arrive. While the "kanzake" preparation of hot sake is good at cutting through the oiliness of sushi or sashimi, the real way to experience the essence of rice wine is to sip on some high-end cold (reishu) or room temperature (jouon) sake.

This Thursday, Sept. 15, Midtown Wine and Spirits, Best Brands and the Bound'ry are giving you the opportunity to do just that as they present an evening of sake tasting led by Kazunaga Kasumi of Wine of Japan. the fun starts at 6 p.m. and costs only $20 per person to enjoy samples of six excellent high-end sakes. Call 321-3043 for reservations.

If you prefer your wine grape-based instead of ricey, Village Wines is teaming up with 360 Bistro to host a tasting of Giacomo Borgogno Barolos with Federico Raviola that same evening, Sept. 15 ,at 6 p.m. The tasting is onlu $15 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Afterwards, Hoyt Hill and 360 will be hosting a "Dutch Treat" BYOB dinner with Federico after the tasting. This is a rare opportunity to spend time with a noted winemaker, so add it to your calendar.

Two nights later on Saturday, Sept. 17, the wines of Spain and Portugal will be featured at The Wines of the World event held by the Brentwood/Cool Springs Chamber of Commerce. The event will be 7-10 p.m. at Lexus of Nashville/Cool Springs at 1636 Westgate Circle in Brentwood.

Guests will sample wines from Portugal and Spain paired with gourmet cuisine, dance to music provided by the Latin band Serenata, bid on fabulous silent auction items or place bids during the live auction. The festivities will also include a chocolate bar and a cigar tent.

Tickets are $45 per person, or $75 for the VIP Wine Enthusiast Package, which includes a ticket to the event, a Riedel stem wineglass and a bottle of wine.

For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Brentwood/Cool Springs Chamber of Commerce website.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, The Palm will host “Have You Forgotten?” a benefit commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Country music legend and Opry member Charlie Daniels and his wife Hazel will host the event, along with celebrity guests Chris Young and Darryl Worley.

Proceeds from the evening will benefit Stars for Stripes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality celebrity entertainment to internationally deployed U.S. military forces. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception and silent auction. The Palm will serve their signature “Surf & Turf” dinner at 7 p.m., followed by dessert and a live auction at 8. Tickets are $250 per person. Tables of eight are available for $1,800, and VIP tables are $3,000.

Special guests John and Jan Vigiano and Lt. Jason Redman will also be honored at the benefit.

If your budget won't allow for a $250 dinner that evening, that same night Woodland Wine Merchant is hosting a Vegetarian Wine Dinner at Marché. Check out the details.
