The School Nutrition Committee of Alignment Nashville recently announced that they have received a $50,000 grant from Healthways, a Middle Tennessee-based health care company. This grant will be used to to support training and orientation for cafeteria managers during the 2011-2012 school year. Part of the money was used to send a group of Metro school cafeteria managers to National School Nutrition Association conference. These managers will take what they learned at the conference and then work to create training modules for cafeteria managers and workers for the upcoming school year.
To many interested parties, working to change school nutrition policies seems to progress at a glacial pace. But the AN School Nutrition Committee has established bold goals over the next three to five years. These include eliminating junk food from cafeterias, installing salad bars in all schools, using more locally grown foods and empowering students to make healthier choices. Hopefully with the help of the Healthways grant and a continued concerted effort, progress can be made as we kick off another school year.
