Alignment Nashville is an organization that was formed to serve as a framework for nonprofit organizations to cooperate and collaborate with the intent of improving the schools of Metro Nashville. Their goal is to align the resources of nonprofits, local businesses and the public sector to get the best return on their investments and efforts as they seek to achieve sustained improvement in public education and the health of our school children.

The School Nutrition Committee of Alignment Nashville recently announced that they have received a $50,000 grant from Healthways, a Middle Tennessee-based health care company. This grant will be used to to support training and orientation for cafeteria managers during the 2011-2012 school year. Part of the money was used to send a group of Metro school cafeteria managers to National School Nutrition Association conference. These managers will take what they learned at the conference and then work to create training modules for cafeteria managers and workers for the upcoming school year.

To many interested parties, working to change school nutrition policies seems to progress at a glacial pace. But the AN School Nutrition Committee has established bold goals over the next three to five years. These include eliminating junk food from cafeterias, installing salad bars in all schools, using more locally grown foods and empowering students to make healthier choices. Hopefully with the help of the Healthways grant and a continued concerted effort, progress can be made as we kick off another school year.
