Butter Cake Babe's is now open inside the Market House, selling butter cakes in multiple flavors (an alluring recent option was peanut-butter-banana), coffee and espresso drinks (hot and cold), plus bagels paired with Granda's own gourmet cream cheese spreads, including raspberry-basil, spinach-artichoke, olive-walnut and one of the most interesting-sounding bagel spreads I've come across: Greek-yogurt-dill-cream-cheese.
Granda also bakes up scones and cappuccino-flavored muffins.
So what is a butter cake? I still haven't tried one. I know they are served as a square, and they are gooey with cream cheese goodness. Here's what I said last time: "I'm not sure I can even wrap my mind around the concept. ... But it seems to be a coffee cake, not a dessert cake, with a bottom layer of regular cake topped with a gooey layer that's almost like pudding or the filling of a chess pie."
In typical Nashville fashion, the baker is married to a musician, Supe Granda of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. (He wrote a humorous song about their courtship called "I Married a Cubs Fan," available in CD format at the counter.)
The two are brainstorming what to do for a grand opening splash. But in the meantime, Butter Cake Babe's will be open for this week's Night Market, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, which is always a great time. ("Shop and sip under the stars" is the slogan: Yes, the Farmers' Market sells wine by the glass on occasion.)
Butter Cake Babe's is open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and during special events at the market, like the monthly Night Market and the swing dances typically held on the third Sunday of the month (1 to 4 p.m. this Sunday, July 17).
