If you're an avid cyclist like your Wandering Wino, July means getting up early to watch the Tour de France on Versus or staying up late to watch the stage finish on your DVR. After years of following the epic cycle, I'm still amazed at the abilities of these athletes to accelerate through a pack of a hundred spandex-wearing maniacs at speeds that I wouldn't even drive on West End.

Speaking of West End, Amerigo on West End is celebrating the TdF with their own salute in the form of a Tour de France Wine Tasting next Wednesday, July 13th from 6-8 pm. They will be sampling wines from four of the country's wine regions. Enjoy Chef Hrant's special appetizers with the wine for just $15 per person, and stay afterwards for dinner to receive 20% off your meal.

From the Northern part of the Beaujolais Village region, we offer the Beaujolais Villages Henry Fessy Vins du Beaujolais. Our next wine comes from the 330-acre estate of Chateau Mont-Redon, Côtes du Rhône, which is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault.

The Mâcon-Villages Chardonnay is a delicate, elegant wine from Mâcconais, a transitional region of Burgundy. Mâcon-Villages represents over 80% of the average annual white wine production of Mâcconais. The Domaine de Valmoissine is our featured Pinot Noir, which comes from the Côteaux du Verdon region. We hope you will join us for this special tasting!

Midtown Wine and Spirits has become the place to be on Saturdays for some free sipping at their regular in-store tastings. This week is no exception as they invite you to sample some of their summer sippers. They are featuring four wines, including a delightful rosé. This week they are expanding their tasting series to include Friday, so drop by either today or tomorrow from 2 to 7 p.m. to try them out. This week they will be pouring:

Bottle-Martin_Codax_opt.jpg
Provenance Sauvignon Blanc

"Grapefruit, pear, herb and lime peel notes have spice, flint and mineral flavors, with a zingy acidity and pleasant pithy notes on the finish." — The Wine Spectator
$12.99 / 750 ml, normally $18.99!

Martín Códax Albariño

"It’s all about white fruits, green herbs and apple. The palate has a firm, standard, high-quality mouthfeel along with tart apple, white peach and pineapple flavors. The finish is pure lime and snap, while the refreshment quotient runs long and strong." — Wine Enthusiast
$15.99 / 750 ml

Crios de Susana Balbo Rosé of Malbec

"Strawberry on the nose, lifted by a citrus element. Supple and moderately sweet, with a plump texture but attractive sugar/acid balance to the dominant strawberry flavor. Easygoing, seamless rose with very good fruit, made via the saignee method." — Stephen Tanzer
$12.99 / 750 ml

Domaine Combe de la Belle
"Jonas" Grenache

"A definition of creativity is to transcend traditional ideas or patterns to create new ideas, methods or forms. The wines of Domaine Combe de la Belle are creativity in a bottle. These wines are rich, concentrated, elegant and made in very small quantities.

Jonas is a super ripe wine of old vine grenache. This deeply colored wine is manually harvested and unfiltered with flavors of spice, liquorice and cocoa."
$19.99 / 750 ml

We try to keep a bottle of the Martín Códax Albariño in our house most of the summer. It's best with the ice crystals from the Igloo cooler still hanging off of the bottle neck!

Finally, if you'd rather have a cold beer than a cold glass of vino, consider Whole Foods in Green Hills for their Craft Brews of the South Tasting tonight 6:30-7:30 p.m. The demo costs only $15 and will feature a sampling and discussion of some of the best selections made in the Southern United States.

Until next week, enjoy these tastings.
