Explaining the Plate That Beat the Food Pyramid

Posted by on Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 5:46 AM

You likely heard about "My Plate," the successor to the somewhat confusing My Pyramid, the USDA's eating guide that required reading glasses to differentiate the different segments.

Myplate.gov does a good job of describing the new icon: Half the plate is fruits and vegetables, and the segment called protein (rather than meat) plays a smaller role. Keeping it simple required leaving out some of the finer details, though.

Enter Alice Henneman of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln (one of my fellow members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals), who put together a fabulous Powerpoint presentation that goes into a lot of detail about Myplate.

Watch and enjoy. If you already eat well, then forward it to someone who can use it to educate children and adults.
