My latest crush is not on a big Food Network celebrichef with a snazzy kitchen/studio loaded down with the latest in culinary toys. I have just discovered a 24-year-old New Yorker transplant from San Francisco who is so darned cute and incredibly funny in her tiny apartment kitchen, that I can't stop watching her YouTube videos over and over. Her name is Hannah Hart, and her online cooking show is titled "My Drunk Kitchen."
So far, Hannah has eight episodes of her single static camera series in the can, ranging from her premiere where she drunkenly attempts to make a grilled cheese sandwich (she realizes halfway through that she doesn't have any cheese) to her latest attempt to make ice cream by shaking a snack-size bag full of milk and vanilla inside another sandwich size plastic bag. Her Ben and Jerry efforts are seriously impaired by her consumption of two bottles of Rose ("it tastes like white wine, but pink") and a couple of falls from the counter as she attempts kitchen parkour.
Her slurred catchphrases have become internet phenomenons, from "butter yo' shit" during the grilled cheese debacle to my personal favorite, "Just because you made it from scratch doesn't mean I can't. I just didn't." She also sells various shirts and aprons emblazoned with these phrases if you want to shout your allegiance to the MDK nation. Hannah's perfect mimosa recipe is sheer genius and has officially been adopted around my household. Basically, you open a bottle of champagne, take a swig and top the bottle off with a few thimbles full of orange juice. She proclaims her attempt to make margaritas in a mason jar ("Jargoritas") during the taco episode as being basically "a big shot."
Her most popular episode is her take on brunch, which she complains comes between her tendency to wake up immediately hungry and her love of lunch. She does compliment brunch as "a reason to drink in the morning." Or as she calls it, "just morning." Her profane tirade at a bag of instant pancake mix that requires you to still add 10 more ingredients to the bowl sounded like something I've grumbled word-for-word in my kitchen.
Part of the entertainment value of My Drunk Kitchen comes from Hannah's talent at editing in crazy quick jumpy cuts that make her kitchenette look like the set of a Guy Ritchie movie. Even though the camera remains static and unflinching, she leaps around the frame like a dervish without concealing any of the action. Except when she falls down.
The episodes are only about five minutes long, so it won't take long to catch up. But don't think you'll be able to get away with watching them at work through your earbuds unless your co-workers won't be distracted by your gales of laughter.
Unfortunately, my courtly love affections will probably remain forever unrequited as she describes herself on her website as "a big ol' homo." The ladies of Brooklyn are lucky. She is indeed a hot damned mess, but I sure like her.
For your entertainment, here is my favorite slice of MDK, Episode 8, "Ice Cream."
You can also follow her on Twitter if you want to see what she's up to in between her drunken kitchen antics.
H/T to blogger extraordinaire BusyMom for turning me on to MDK.

Reminds me of Dr. Steve Brule, except he is sober. Usually. Here he is with Kathy Mitchell of infomercial fame, demoing a panini maker.

Day drinkers are fun again. I think maybe a little Bailey's in my coffee and finish off Saturday's Prince's Hot Chicken. Thanks. I'm a fan now too.
yikes that's interesting.... kinda reminds me of Extreme Chef - it starts thursday night (10, 9c) but last night's sneak peek made chefs cook in really absurd conditions (like... handcuffed? lol)
"You know what's better than just ice cream? Ice cream with shit on top". My friends, universal truth does exist.
She actually edits her own videos... she's multi-talented. (This is coming from a fan since the London "Deluxe" episode.) Love Harto, she's hilarious!
Hey, take the MDK "Trivia Edition" quiz / homage to MDK at http://tinyurl.com/6fhpb7g It's a lot of fun!
Reminds me a lot of a couple of ladies from Birmingham who have been doing something similar (only a lot less hammered) for a little while longer. But I think their main focus is food, then comedy. :) http://www.drinkingchefs.com/
