Twitterzens offered several good suggestions about where to eat in Antioch before a lake trip, and we settled on Fat Boy's on Murfreesboro Road.
For classic purist barbecue, it's as good as you could hope: smoked and chopped, with a little bark in each sandwich. Fat Boy's serves it without sauce, which means there's no fighting about Memphis-Kansas-Carolina-Texas style. Just smoky meat chopped to bite-size (or should that be "Bites-size"?) and tender enough to enjoy, with just the right chew left so you know it's not overcooked.
The sides are homemade, extra good news for slaw lovers who find sweet slaw unbearable. They served mine on the side. The mac and cheese looked suitably creamy and was downed almost before I got a fork to the table.
Some of the commenters on urbanspoon.com call it the best barbecue around, and A Man's Gotta Eat called it "better than Whitt's", which isn't such a lofty standard, but also said it might be juicier than Martin's, on his visit anyway.
Fat Boy's menu (see below) is respectably long — long enough, anyway, to keep us coming back for another taste. Fat Boy's Bar-B-Q is at 2733 Murfreesboro Road (360-9969). Hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
