Food Truck Alert! Philly Cheesesteaks Today at MetroCenter

I don't get it. After people have griped for years that they can't get a decent Philly cheesesteak in Nashville, here come two young Philadelphians, Jennifer Zungolo and Christopher Eddis, with a food truck dispensing the best cheesesteaks we've ever encountered in this town — and their Labor of Love Mobile Food wagon is having a hard time finding not only a location but customers.

Is it the price? Nope: a plenty-filling half-sandwich is around $5. (Chris Crimmins of Crimmins Construction and I got into a macho sandwich face-off last week and each downed an entire $8 sub, and I felt like Monty Python's Mr. Creosote.) Is it the location? Maybe: Unless you're headed in the right direction past the Music City Center construction on Eighth Avenue South, it's easy to miss even a bright yellow truck in the United Methodist parking lot.

Is it the food? Oh HELL no. Recently the owners unveiled a variation on their cheesesteak with mushrooms and sweet cherry peppers — same finely chopped lean sirloin, same gooey provolone, same imported fresh rolls from Philly's Amoroso's Bakery, yet somehow even better than the steak I'd had the week before. Their meatball sub? Impeccable. Their Italian ices? As perfect a summer sidewalk cooler as an open hydrant on a city street. And they're about to add Tastykakes!

I wish these folks had a brick-and-mortar location, as I think more customers would take a chance on their lovingly assembled fare. But if you haven't tried Labor of Love, you're missing out on some of the best sandwiches in the entire city. Lucky folks in MetroCenter, you're the ones in close proximity today, as Labor of Love sets up in the United Methodist warehouse parking lot at 341 Great Circle Road from noon to 2 p.m.
There's a good thing at stake here.
