Planning Ahead for Fat Tuesday: Mardi Gras Meal at F. Scott's

It just so happens that I've gotten into a bad cycle with my biannual checkups with my physician. When we first started seeing each other about five years ago, I could always remember which of my two yearly visits was the more (ahem) invasive of the two because it was the one that was always scheduled near Valentine's Day. How romantic. The other one, which is mainly about blood work to check out whether I had 10-W-30 or Crisco coursing through my veins, was always closer to Halloween, so I just used vampires as a mnemonic.

The problem was that since one of my diagnostic visits was usually a few weeks before Lent, I was leading the absolute worst life in preparation for 40+ days of asceticism. Finally, I asked him last year to move out my appointment a few weeks so that maybe I could be a month into vegetarianism before he passed judgment on my fitness.

So of course Ash Wednesday is almost as late as the lunar calendar will allow it to be this year, and I'll be visiting Dr. Jellyfinger the week beforehand. Oh well, no sense trying to be good now.

Luckily, my friends at F. Scott's Restaurant & Jazz Bar are planning a blow-out for Fat Tuesday. Laissez les bons temps rouler at their Mardi Gras Party next Tuesday, March 8, with this decadent menu:

Featuring Cajun Specialties from Chef Ramquist's Kitchen

Roasted Oysters on the Half Shell, Shrimp and Corn Maque Choux

Duck Confit Gumbo, Andouille Sausage, Black Truffle Risotto, Cracklins

Blackened Grouper Filet with Crawfish Etoufee, Stone Ground Grits, Crispy Spinach

Creole Spiced Tournedos of Hereford Beef Tenderloin, Bacon and Scallion Smashed Potatoes,
with Wild Mushrooms, Sazerac Beef Jus

The Teri Reid Trio will be playing live (and lively) jazz in the lounge from 7 to 10 p.m. for your entertainment. Maybe I just won't open that envelope from my doctor's office for a while...

Call 269-5861 for reservations.
