Now Gulch neighbor Urban Flats is upping the ante with some new additions to their menu. It is described as a seasonal update. Although I don't see any particular autumn/winter ingredients being emphasized, it's always nice to introduce a little variety.
A fried green tomato starter makes an appearance with the bold addition of Green Goddess dressing. Try to block out memories of the salad bar at Sperry's and give this one a try. An Urban Meatball Flatwich sounded really appetizing until I saw it was topped with "urban sauce." Maybe that would sound a little more appetizing at one of Urban Flats' Florida locations, but in the hometown of Mr. Kidman ...
Blackened Pacific cod and a chicken Cordon Bleu dish have both been added to the entrée offerings for less than $12, so they might be worth a try. My favorite flatbreads, the Black and Blue and the fig-and-prosciutto both survived the cut to remain on the new menu, so that's a very good thing. New additions include a Spicy Urban Flat with roasted chicken and sweet Italian sausage with jalapeño peppers, red onion, tomatoes and bacon on top. That and the "White Out" Flat, with mozzarella, feta, Parmesan and Alfredo sauce sound like winners if you're confident about your LDL levels.
There is also a flatbread on the menu that is a polarizing element where I have frequently found myself on the minority side of the argument, the Hawaiian. It is topped with barbecue chicken, mozzarella, bacon, pineapple and jalapeños. First, a little background — before I went away to college in California, I was a totally normal pizza lover. In fact, Pizza Hut could have named the Meat Lover and Pepperoni Lover varieties after me.
Four years later I came back to Tennessee with a degree in history, a newfound competency with chopsticks and frisbees and a peculiar love for Hawaiian pizzas. When it came time to order a late night 'za, my friends looked at me like I had grown a third arm out of my forehead when I suggested ham and pineapple as toppings. At best, I could talk them into letting me put my toppings on half of one of the pies. More often, I retreated to my own tiny can of Dole pineapple chunks tucked in the back of the refrigerator behind the Meister Brau to dress my own slices.
Am I the only one? Apparently somebody else shares my affection/affliction if it's still on the Urban Flats menu. In fact, maybe I'll go get one for myself tonight. Of course I'll probably get it for carry-out and eat it alone in my car. ...
