Brew News: Brewsters, Jackalope and Blackstone Tap Room in Works

It's a good time to be a fan of craft brews in Nashville. In addition to everybody's old favorites like Yazoo, there are several new ventures and expansions of current enterprises in the works.

West End stalwart Blackstone Restaurant & Brewery is finishing work on their new bottling and distribution operation at 2312 Clifton Ave. They hope to begin offering tours and tastings starting this spring. We'll be first in line to check out the new digs. (Check the Blackstone blog for time-lapse video of the new facility in progress.)

Set to open any day now is newcomer Brewsters Brewery in Madison at 271 Gleaves St., in the site of the former Pargo’s. Checking the location out in Google Maps, I am again puzzled about where Madison ends and Rivergate begins, so somebody please feel free to enlighten me. I don't get up that way very often, but for the promise of a cool new brewpub, I could easily be persuaded.

Finally, you may recall that Sean Maloney gave us all a heads-up about an upcoming brewery, Jackalope Brewing Co., which is preparing to go toe to toe and tap to tap with their future neighbors at Yazoo — the target opening date is April. (I wonder whether the fact that both breweries will be within staggering distance of the Scene's editorial and sales offices helped when they were working on their business plans and potential customer studies.)

Jackalope wants to get a head start on establishing customer loyalty with their "League of Enduring Legends" program. Basically, they're just looking for people who want to become early adopters of Jackalopemania and who might be willing to pony up a little cash in advance in return for some really cool future benefits.

A hundred bucks earns you "Gremlin" status. Limited to just 150 people, Gremlins will receive three free pints per month during the first year that the tap room is open. Since pints will cost $4 apiece, that's a pretty nifty ROI. At the next level, $250 makes you one of 125 "Yetis," who will receive the same benefits as Gremlins with the addition of a free growler per month for year and an extra free growler during your birthday month. But if you want to be the legend of all Legends, $750 establishes you as one of the 75 Jackalope fans who can call themselves "Loch Ness Monsters." LNM's will receive Yeti benefits for life, their own exclusive-use beer stein to be stored in the tap room, their name enshrined on the wall of the bar and invitations to exclusive parties where I guess they'll get together and count each other's humps.

No matter which level of "Legendary" status you aspire to, it's obvious the Jackalope folks know how to have fun and are willing to take their mythical beast namesake theme to the nth degree. If you want to read more about the trials and tribulations of opening a brewery, I highly suggest following them on Facebook and reading their entertaining Blogalope.
