We here at Bites occasionally get taken to task for not letting y'all know when a restaurant gives up the ghost. While it's never fun to notify folks that their favorite pizza joint, or hell, any small business, has gone under, it is news. Unfortunately it's not always easy to find out that the doors have shut, because when a new restaurant opens they send out stacks of press releases, but when they close up shop ... not so much.
We sometimes depend on our helpful readers to tip us off about trouble. Last week I found out about a restaurant's demise from a new source, Groupon. I had purchased two Groupons for Otter's Chicken in the Fifth and Main condo development, since it was a very convenient place to tailgate before Titans games, with cold beer and perfectly serviceable chicken tenders and wings. Apparently, not enough people agreed with me.
At least the residents of Fifth and Main can still walk downstairs and enjoy drinks and bistro fare at Allium. And luckily for me, the other locations of Otter's will honor the East Nashville certificates, but it's a bit of a schlep between LP Field and Demonbreun Street (or Cool Springs, Murfreesboro or Marietta, Ga., the other locations of the locally owned chain).
The way the Titans have been playing lately, though, I'll need stronger drink than Miller Lite to make it through Thursday's game anyway.
