Furthermore, Bob has another ace up his sleeve: He's bringing Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams to town! Jeni's is based out of Columbus, Ohio, and has developed quite a cult following. Using recipes developed during her time working at a French patisserie, Jeni Britton Bauer creates artisan ice cream flavors using milk sourced from a small herd of cows from Snowville Creamery in Pomeroy, Ohio.
When I asked a Midwestern friend how Jeni's might measure up against, say, Sweet CeCe's Frozen Yogurt, the wildly successful tart (and low- or no-fat) yogurt shop just a block from Hot & Cold, she replied, "Frozen yogurt? This is all about the butterfat!"
Well, alrighty then. A quick peek at Jeni's list reveals some absolutely outrageous flavors. Amongst the signature flavors are Salty Caramel, Honey Vanilla Bean, Queen City Cayenne, Pistachio & Honey, Bourbon Buttered Pecan and Riesling Poached Pear Sorbet. Seasonal options rotate regularly and currently include Brown Butter Almond Brittle, Sweet Cream with Appalachian Elderberries, Oakvale Young Gouda with Vodka-Plumped Cranberries, Goat Cheese with Cognac Fig Sauce, and Olive Oil with Sea Salted Pepitas.
I admit I might have looked down my nose a little bit at the people who camped out in front of the Bridgestone Arena for Garth Brooks tickets. But looking at Jeni's flavors makes me want to dig out my sleeping bag and mattress pad and stake out a spot in front of Hot & Cold. Please try to step over me when you're staggering home from the Villager.
