This Thursday, Nov. 4, there are two interesting events going on at Viking in addition to their regular schedule of classes.
One of the area's most accomplished and genial chefs, Jason McConnell, will perform in the demo kitchen 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, teaching a class dedicated to the rich bounty of the season, sourced from local Tennessee farmers. McConnell leads the kitchen at his three Franklin restaurants, Red Pony, Sol and 55 South. Additionally, he mans Jay Jay’s Good Food Truck, and is developing Jason’s Guac Starter.
Jason is a very entertaining and personable guy, and I'm sure his class will be a cornucopia of fun. He will demonstrate how to prepare a fall-inspired menu, with dishes such as butternut rotolo, braised meats and savory desserts. Each guest will receive a tasting portion of the prepared dishes, and printed recipes will be provided. Tickets cost $30 and are available at the Viking web site.
But if friendly competition is your idea of food fun, stop by Viking earlier in the day, for an event courtesy of the Just A Pinch Recipe Club, an online recipe-swapping club created by Franklin-based American Hometown Publishing. Just a Pinch is meant to be a high-tech version of your old recipe file box, stored at their website at www.justapinch.com.
The Just A Pinch Blue Ribbon Showcase will be held noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday. This event will feature the winner of their national Ultimate Salad Toss recipe contest (stop snickering at the title), who will prepare her winning salad before a live audience with recipe tester Janet Tharpe. All guests at the showcase will enjoy the following recipe club dishes prepared by The Viking Store’s chefs.
· Contest Winner — Mandarin Orange Strawberry Spinach Salad
· Cumin Grilled Pork Chops
· French Potato Soup
· Death by Oreo Cupcakes
The event is mainly for Just a Pinch subscribers, but if you want to check it out there may be some seats available. Email Sherry Parfait at email@example.com if you're interested.
