Time to Find My Eatin' Pants Again — Flavors of Nashville Event Returns on Oct. 17

Last year, when I was still relatively new at this food writing gig, I agreed to be one of the judges at the American Liver Foundation's "Flavors of Nashville" fundraiser. Now, despite four to five YMCA visits a week every week since then, I can tell you that I have never gotten back to the weight I was before that evening. My fellow judges and I sampled appetizers from all 13 participating chefs, then sat down to a five-course dinner courtesy of Chef Carl Schultheis of the Red Pony in Franklin.

Ten pounds of fine dining and food writing later, I have agreed to reprise my role as judge this year. But the cool part about it is that you can be a judge as well. The format of the evening is that all participants enjoy cocktails, wine and appetizers while the individual chefs and their staffs prepare their tablescapes and meals. After cocktails, the chefs draw lots to see which table numbers they will be serving. Diners sit down to the multi-course meal and wine pairings as the chefs explain the inspiration behind their plates, wine choices and table decorations. The atmosphere is convivial, with a healthy helping of competition between the individual chefs.

At the end of the evening, the crowd votes for individual awards, including Best Appetizer and Best in Show. The professional judges (yeah, me — quit snickering!) will select the most Creative Menu and the Best Table Setting. Luckily, I will be joined by lovely, talented and popular food blogger, Beth Sachan of Eat. Drink. Smile. She should add some class to the proceedings.
