Darlene's Cakes, formerly on Sixth Avenue downtown, had an ideal spot — all those office buildings, all those obligatory celebrations of birthdays, promotions, retirements and Secretary's Day.

I was a little surprised to hear Darlene's was moving, but it does seem like a good fit: The cakery will operate from Fox's Doughtnut Den in Green Hills.

You order at DD or by phone (they accept Paypal — how smart is that!) and you pick up there, too. Someone from Darlene's will be at DD Tuesday through Saturday, and the rest of the time, a DD employee can help. Darlene's will deliver to downtown free of charge.

Same kind of kitchen but not a competing business — it's a good synergy, like Christie Cookie + Bravo Gelato. What other niche food businesses should share space?
