Food52.com set out a couple of years ago to create a crowd-sourced cookbook of recipes gathered from, tested by, and voted on by home cooks. That's done and the book is coming from Harper Studio, but food52 found yet another killer app: a small but choice collection of specialty ingredients from artisanal sources.

Cheeses, meats, fine-quality pimenton, sapa, farro pearls, bottarga di muggine (cured, grated mullet roe from Sardinia), fetishy chocolates like white lime chocolate tablet and even vegetarian mincemeat.

I'm springing for the real maraschino cherries to put into my own stocking when the gift-giving season rolls around.

Food52 doesn't have everything, but everything they have is wonderful, like Chambord's French press, El Bulli's ice cream spoons and Liberty of London print napkins. Each item features a description, an explanation of why it was selected, and a profile of the supplier, which makes it almost as much a pleasure to window shop as it is to buy.

Food52.com/products carries all that stuff you hear about but never find in the store, or would never have time to seek out from the dozens of specialty companies that food52 brings together.
