Hard times and competition — but mostly a thousand-dollar-a-month rise in the rent — combined to convince owners to close Chinese Kitchen on Richard Jones Road.

- Chinese Kitchen will close tonight after 9 p.m.
Tonight the little eatery, owned by Pei Piho and her husband Hoa Pan, will be serving the last of its limited but dependably good buffet. Piho says business had slowed since September of last year. The rise in rent confirmed their decision.
Piho and Pan took over the place from previous owner around 1992. The building housed a 7-11 convenience store until the mid-1980s.
The couple plan to take a break and wait until the economy improves before looking into whether to open again in another location.
