Weekly Open Thread is Full of Advice

Posted by Nicki Wood on Fri, May 28, 2010 at 10:05 AM

Friend of Bites the radio show Liberadio wants to remind everyone that if you know of someone in need of flood-related help, their website has a comprehensive listing of services, and of opportunities to help. Because while some of the city is back to normal, others are still picking up the pieces.

To that topic, this week Nashville eaters raised still more money for flood relief. We also watched as East Nashville's Family Wash was featured on Tennessee Crossroads on public television and argued abut Trader Joe's.

If you had one of the last dinners at the old tayst, buy something at Sweet Relief bake sale for flood relief, or just want to weigh in on a discussion in an old thread, Open Thread is the place to tell all.

There is going to be a LOT of stuff for sale tomorrow at the bake sale. I hope everyone comes out to buy! I made scones. They are good, I promise!

You know we're all just going to buy from each other and become enormous. I'm making Krispy Kreme bread pudding with rum sauce. Someone take these little delights away from me!

Haha! I was thinking the same thing!! Lindsay is actually afraid we are going to have too much stuff and won't even be able to sell it all. I'm thinking that the bloggers/foodies participating will just end up buying what's left!

I'm going with 2 of my tried and true simple recipes- Chewy Cocounut Cookies (of which I devoured at least a 1/2 cup of raw dough and 4 baked cookies fresh from the oven last night) and my kids-of-all-ages favorite: Rice krispie sandwiches with peanut butter and chocolate in the center. I could eat a whole pan by myself! (and probably will before the weekend is over)

Well, I am definitely bringing a lot of cash, but partly because friends who can't make it have been placing some orders with me!

Don't tell me if those coconut cookies involve chocolate somehow.

OT: Has anyone ever had the burger at Twin Kegs on Thompson Lane? That thing oughta skip all the early brackets and head straight for the Elite Eight. I understand today is Catfish Day too.

I have a friend coming to town from L.A. to "test out" Nashville as a possible place to live in the future with his wife and kids. His wife's birthday is taking place while they are here and he wants restaurant suggestions to take her out to a good birthday dinner. What should I suggest? (It will be just him and the wife, no kids). Thanks!

I'm referencing the OT comment:

Yeah I've had a burger at Twin Kegs several times and they are quite good.Could be one of the top 4 burgers in Nashville IMO.

Twin Kegs usually takes a big negative hit overall because #1 the place is a bar and #2 people smoke there.I have seen this sentiment replicated in several blog reviews.

The 10-course 'last supper' at tayst killed (although the mostly excellent pairings were a tad heavy on sweet wines). I thought the "hot quail (Prince's style)" was the highlight, even if the heat was moderate. Kitchen and dining staff hustled admirably through the evening. Chef Jeremy Barlow emerged from the kitchen along with the final course to warm and spontaneous (not to mention well deserved) dining-room-wide applause. He remains tight lipped about what the renovation will entail; even the staff is being kept largely in the dark because, as one explained, Jeremy wants the staff along with diners to experience the reconfigured enterprise as new and surprising. It reopens June 8 witha special "taystLift" dinner.

Carrie: there are loads of great places for a nice dinner, but help us narrow it down a little. What kind of food and experience do they want?

Should you tip the person who gets your take out order at PF Changs? (My mother-in-law likes take out from there when she's in town.)

Nicki: he didn't give me a lot of advice, just said somewhere that's good to take someone on their birthday, not too loud, and not too casual. I was going to suggest tayst, but it is closed right now. I would love to send him to a place that incorporates local ingredients and/or tastes. Margot? Miel? Flyte? I've never been to any of these places (I KNOW) so I need some expert advice.

Margot, Miel and Flyte would all be really good choices. They'll get excellent food, good atmosphere and good service at any of those. But definitely tell them to call for a reservation, and ask a lot of questions.

Carrie, I'd also recommend Germantown Cafe with its excellent view of the capitol building and interesting neighborhood. I think someone from LA could appreciate that area.

Does anyone know if Corner Market's pimento cheese is being sold anywhere? I know their sesame dressing is at a gas station/market on Harding Rd. If not, does anyone have the recipe? It was so spicy and delicious...I miss it!

If I remember correctly, the Twin Kegs burger is a "juicy lucy" (cheese inside the burger patty. It is outstanding.
